Fourth Street Beat - May 1999

Update

Sentiments to those with anniversaries, expressed so nicely from Terry et al: "Another year, another chapter in your stories. May you gain strength with each as it unfolds. Love to y'all from Virginie."

2/11/99 - This from Aunt Betty, who now has a computer! "My homework today is to update my address book. Susan's right - it keeps the mind active but I think it also raises my blood pressure!"

2/13/99 - "Thought i'd share some exciting news with you! Chris sings with an exclusive choir downtown and has been chosen along with 14 others to sing two songs with Celine Dion when she comes here in April! They will perform in front of 20,000 in our new arena- pretty cool for an 11 yr old! The concert has been sold out since December so we don't even get to go and Libby is very disappointed- they are trying to get us one ticket for a parent-he will learn the music the month before and then rehearse with her that day and perform that night- this choir received international recognition last month and they are really extraordinary- the choir is the Columbus Children's Choir and there are three choirs within that- he sings with the Santa Maria choir which is the top- he is one of three fifth graders and the rest are in middle and high school of course the other choirs are the Nina and the Pinta- get it? In any event, we are very excited for him and proud that he was chosen- thought you might include this in family news". submitted by proud Mama, Marilyn Wood

BUT on 4/27/99-this from Marilyn: Hi! Celine cancelled due to her husbands' cancer diagnosis but is rescheduled for 9/27/99- chris will still do it! lib just finished her first dance competition for the year and received seven gold medals, two for solos and five for group work- she also received a special award for pleasing the director for "Make em laugh" from "Singing in the rain"! it made the time worth it for her- she wants to dance anywhere but will mainly do flag corps work with the high school band this year- no musical for her but Chris auditioned for Godspell and will be very busy with that… we'll keep plugging away at work and drive them all over! must go to say my goodnights to Chris love to all!"

2/19/99-and this, also, from Marilyn when asked about Libby's dancing: "Libby is just about ready for competition season-will do two solos, one in lyrical dance and one in tap-her lyrical is "Cherokee Morning" and it is very Native American in style and costume- her tap is "Make em Laugh" from Singing in the Rain. Donald O'Connor made it famous- she will also compete in three group numbers in pointe, tap and jazz- lots of entry fees and costumes but she truly wants to make dance her career- she would love to go to Jackson, Mississippi for a liturgical dance and ballet workshop but it is  $1000.00 for two wks and kinda expensive!- she has big dreams…"

2/13/99 from Andee G. via email to Susan - Carr: "We just got back from the "Country Diner" (new name is different, but to us old- timers, it'll always be the old name.) We took Mom to Mass at St. A's, and met Ed Poltrack there afterward. Steve and I that is, and Mom and Ed. He seemed to enjoy the break and bemoaned getting into cyberspace at the instigation of his kids. They bought him a refrigerator, if he would buy a computer. He doesn't have it all set up, yet, fussing abbut the $200 desk, and all the added charges. He enjoyed your Mom's quote about making her computer look "early American." Also, Ron has lost his job. Not good for anyone."

3/99- Mom is now napping, here at the house. She does sleep a lot. It was her first time to church in a long time, as she fainted the last two times, before Christmas. She was with the caregivers then. I kept a watchful eye on her, and took her arm to stand or sit. She seemed to doze a tiny bit, but as the priest says, 'People have been sleeping in church for years. At the end of the Mass, the pastor made a point of coming to us, way in the back,(of course) and gave Mom a special blessing. I was especially touched. The music was beautiful today too; the senior choir sang, the one I quit just this fall. after nine years. I just needed a break, as I have been in a choir for most of my life, and definitely my entire married life. I have been enjoying going to different masses, and with my hubby….sitting with him! Love, Andee"

2/13/99 - "Happy Valentine's Day. We just got back from Brad's treat - breakfast at the little local restaurant --very cozy and crowded - camations from ownor Todd for all the ladies…. Steph was here too with boyfriend and his parents (who are childhood friend's of Brad's) and mom too. Festive. Pop is status quo. We go to TX to see Pat and rodeo on Feb 23-28 - should be fun. Brad takes Jesse to Disneyworld the end of March (Jesse gets 2 weeks, I don't. I would like to go too! Maybe another time)." Susan Carr"

Harry and Patti Spiegelberg spent the month of January on the mainland. Patti's daughter presented them with a new grandchild…. Harry and Susan visited Bob, Cathy and Amy (and each other several times).

2/25/99 from Bob Janis who is cutting a very professional CD due out May 5th: "There will be ten songs on the CD. Couldn't afford more. Plus cost of producing the physical copies! I hope I sell a bunch!!! "Setting Sun Lady" is on there because, of all my songs, that's the one that Jeff always pauses to listen to if I am playing and he is around the house. He listens to the others, but that one draws him. "Bits of Glass" because Amy loves it. And of course "Private Life" because I wrote it about my wifey!! I'm the eternal optimist in terms of sales. If I can sell 2000, I will look at doing a second Album. The digital tape is in Nashville now for final mastering. This is where they electronically even out the levels of all the instruments, vocals drums, and remove any little noises that may be present. From that I will get a master CD to have the copies generated from. I do have my "liner notes" written. Waiting for time and weather cooperation to have a photo session with Cathy. Remember the overlook we drove up to when you were here? At night, I recall. I want a shot of me, with guitar, with that as the backdrop for the cover.( in the daylight)." Editor' Note: Folks I gotta tell you, I got a sneak preview cassette tape, and this is dynamite!! Bob at his best! You'll all want one.

3/3/99 from Susan Carr: "I am trying to put - together some stuff for mom for her birthday-- -HELP requesting TWO items - one about Tony-one about Betty would you please send me (by April 20) a story, remembrance, vignette or whatever of some pleasant memory you have of Betty and Tony - emailing it to me is fine- I will assemble the materials Thanks in advance."

3/4/99 also from Susan Carr. "Does anyone keep tabs on Adeline?" and "Texas was busy and fun with the rodeo and hill country and alamo and museums and Pat and her boyfriend…. wonderful weather treat for us!"

3/9/99- this from Sharrie - "Hi all….well we've had a winter weekend here……got about a foot of snow yesterday….quite a storm. Today is sunny, but tres windy and COLD. love to all."

from Cynthia: I suggest to all that you see the movie "The Other Sister". Tom Hines, Peter's peer and lifelong neighbor, is the best man! He's having quite abit of success in the movie industry…will next be in "The Runaway Bride" with Richard Gerry and Julia Roberts.

Bev has taped a "Hollywood Squares" show, which she was given to understand would be shown sometime in May. She "won" only $500 which, I think, is the guaranteed minimum. I asked Beverly if she wanted me to keep quiet about this but she said "No". She wants all the publicity she can get. per Uncle Ed P.

3/30/99 - from Bob Janis: "Sometimes I do dislike the nature of my busy life. No time is no excuse so I won't use it. I have plenty of time, my problem is how fast it goes! Meaning and meaning to note you on our coming visit with Peter. We are having Easter lunch with him and Jeff, who we are flying down for the day! Really looking forward to it. Cathy is joining me, (on Spring break), for a business trip to Atl, Savannah, and then we are doing a 3 day weekend at Hilton Head. Whoopee! Golf!

My CD has hit a slight time delay. We had a computer "crash" on one song and I had to re- record. Done now and I will have the master CD upon return from this trip. I have started the artwork process with the CD manufacturer. Expect finished product May 5. Bob"

4/11/99 from Terry: "We are having our annual convention in San Diego at the Hotel del Coronado. It's a beautiful hotel (remember Some Like It Hot with Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe? It's the beach resort where they end the movie). The Duke of Windsor met Wallis Simpson there, and Thomas Edison installed all the original wiring. it's part of the National Trust and was home away from home for Greta Garbo, among others, and has hosted some 16 presidents. Gerald Ford, in fact, is one of our speakers this year. Marianne will stay over in LA for a day or two, then join me. A lot of work--we work with local college students to produce a magazine based on the event--but it should be fun. I wonder if I can send a virtual postcard!"

4/11/99 John Poltrack: "First of all- Summer in Cape Cod Aug 7 till 14th at Nickerson State Park, sleeping outside. Some day if we ever get rich, we'll stay in a building. Hope to link up with as many relatives as possible. There are several free ways to find if other folks are "logged in". I have been using "ICQ" with Matthew. This progam will indicate when other friends and family are available via the internet. You can communicate in a more immediate mode than email. AOL has purchased ICQ which is available for free download: http://www.icq.com/download. I use a user name of "Nhoj" which I chose because "Roycroft" was already chosen. This is a fun product because it's more immediate than email. Ginny reminded me how the Poltrack's would have 13 differenct conversations going at the same time. I know i would pay attention if at least 4 of them pertained to quantum mechanics…."

Peter Northgraves should be a homeowner by the time this is issued. Has bought a condo in Buckhead area of Atlanta, GA. Congrats, Peter.

Education

4/14/99 -Had a great chat with Susan Spiegelberg. She's winding down and trying to do everything in San Francisco that she's wanted to do before she leaves. No more teaching for awhile. Going home June 19th. Looking for summer work and applying to Hawaiian Airlines and Southwest Airlines for possible flight attendant position. Good luck darlin'.

4/27/99 - from Susan Spiegelberg: "Things are pretty good! I went away for the weekend with a friend. We walked in the Big Sur Marathon. We only did 10 miles, it was a special walk within the marathon. It was absolutely beautiful. It was really nice to get away too! I have sent my resume to Hawaiian and SWA. I'll let you know when I hear back! I have been invited to a Hawaiian interview, but I am hoping they will send me home for it or else I can't go!"

Katie Janis graduates and gets her "hood" on May 16th. This is a very big deal and we're very happy for you Katie. Thought Mike had a great line he was going to use on Bob, had he ended up calling, during the final NCAA game between UCONN and Duke. Because of the time difference, he was going to say "look, I'll tell you the score so you don't have to watch"!!

We ALL know about Emma's project. Have made an attempt to reproduce the gathered folklore in special section below. Hope to see the finished product and wish her an A++.

quote from a personal statement…see if you can guess who wrote it:

"…these strong, symbiotic ties formed as a surgical resident working in concert with the Vascular Medicine and Radiology departments provided me with a unique opportunity to spend the current academic year as a Peripheral Vascular Endovascular Fellow and to participate in research protocols utilizing Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor gene therapy to treat patients with critical limb ischemia. Thus far, this year has provided an immersion into vascular disease from evaluating patients presenting across the spectrum of stages of vascular disease, to deciding upon a workup strategy, performing and interpreting the non- invasive and invasive tests, and then guiding the patient toward the appropriate treatment option, surgical or otherwise. I have already performed over 150 percutaneous endovascular cases, encompassing carotid, subclavian, renal, aortic, and iliac artery percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and stenting, as well as PTA of infrainguinal, popliteal, and, on occasion, infrageniculate arterial lesions. Extensive use of IVUS to evaluate the pre-and postprocedural lesion characteristics is applied. My experience also includes use of directional atherectomy, lytic cases, both arterial and venous, as well as fistuloplasties of hemodialysis access grafts and treatment of ischemia with prostaglandin infusion."

Job Beat

Billy Northgraves has been announced as new Region Manager for the east for Furon Company. He's responsible for managing the $22 million dollar territory from Canada to Florida to Detroit. Nice going, Bill!

Nancy Northgraves recently started as an account executive for Stringer & Co. - an ad agency north of Boston. Congrats to you, too, Nancy.

2/2/99 from Terry, "Just catching up with aol. Dave has been prominent in the press lately, defending the networks' performance in the face of numbers that show them in a free fall. Whistling in the dark, if you ask me. Still, he's highly regarded by many. Our chief economist here was just on a panel with him in New York and kept calling him "Terry" by mistake."

2/8/99 from Terry: "I'm at work, so I'm not writing this right now… "Marianne's funding is still on, but she's looking around. May do some free-lance work for Hearst (my former boss is now the president there). Emma just turned 13 on Sunday and has learned the teen-age world of total self-absorption fairly quickly. We expect her to join us again in about five years. We're still trying to buy our house, and expect to close Feb. 12. Meanwhile, I'm off to Key Largo next week for a three-day seminar. M is still trying to figure out how I managed a trip on my own to Florida in February. Pretty clever, huh!" We all know that John Poltrack's previous company, Compaq, was sold to Software Quality Partners (SQP) in December. [Actually taken over by Hewlett-Packard]

4/21/99 John Mahoney is now in charge - head of coordinator for the pilot interviewing process for Southwest Air…Phoenix based. Means when interviews are scheduled, he gets pulled off a trip (if on one), gets paid for full trip and gets to stay home rather than return to flying those trips. A very nice position! Congrats, John!

Health Beat

Tony Poltrack and family will be receiving hospice help in the months to come. Hospice comes in daily which is comforting. He is not eating very well and he is absolutely so thin… he was just diagnosed with pneumonia and is on antibiotics, but one can only wonder if he has any reserves to withstand this….3/5/99.

3/29/99 -this was from Sharrie: "Well….I've been to Ct this past weekend…..and Mom is not good….she is really very uncomfortable… rambling and sleeping fitfully and very briefly like 10 minutes…I rubbed her back and sang etc…..then she would finally doze off to wake again within 10 min or less….trying to sit up and rambling on and on making little sense….it's awful sad…..and I would like everyone to pray for her…..that she's at peace and comfortable which means is it time for the Lord to take her? It isn't fair to her to be like this…..she hasn't gotten up and dressed in over a week. Andee said a week ago Friday she was still sleeping a lot, but, getting up dressed and visited with Dee and boys…where she perked up. Well…..not so now…..and boy is it hard on the caregivers…She didn't even acknowledge that I was there on Fri/Sat….she did say my name and Marilyn's… but little recognition. pray please. She still will show some of her fiestiness though!! Please pass the info along the internet to the rest of the family. Cyn? thanks….visited with your folks a little sat also…while Andee was with Mom. We spelled each other. Dee told Andrew and he said….that's wonderful because God is there.! how sweet…..so keep those prayers going. love to all and thank you, sharrie"

4/27/99 - at this point, Aunt Helene is having a remarkable "recovery". OFF pain medication, except a patch at night. Sitting up during the day in chair, using commode, laughing on occasion and enjoying company. Amazing and NO answers as to what's going on!!!

4/5/99 "Pop is over pneumonia - but eats erratically good some days. bad some days. I don't understand how his body can take it. the Poltrack constitution I guess. love Susan"

Of Interest

More snow in Columbus, OH by 1/2/99 than they'd had in the last 4 years. New England, on the other hand, has had an unusually mild, snowless winter. La Nina and now a TAO to think about (TransAtlantic Oscillation).

"WHY does the gap, between one Christmas and the next, keep shrinking? Craig Feldhak has sent me his explanation via email. He points out that "At the time of your first birthday, a single year constitutes 100% of your life. When you turn 2, a year is half a lifetime. By the time you get to forty, it's a much smaller percentage of your total experience. The smaller the slice of time," writes Craig, "the faster the perception of its passing." I take his point but I don't like it. It suggests that I'm only noticing any of this because I am starting to get old!" from Pat Poltrack.

Family Folklore

In response to Emma's plea for family folklore for school project, I submit the following emails:

4/20/99"….personally, I enjoyed buying the latest issue of Archie or Little Lulu comics…. those WERE the days, weren't they? :-) Pat"

4/20/99 John:  "Susan has very nice words but of course she has made a basic error in memory which of course I need to correct. The orange soda that I also remember fondly was not "Orange Crush" a product of the Coca Cola conglomerate but something I believe was called "Pal". These were the "good old days" when soft drinks were very regional. I think this stuff only existed in New Canaan. The stuff was great and Helen & Charlie always had plenty. Along with the great cider in the fall from the orchard just a few blocks away. It came in a clear glass bottle with a red painted heart and was an unearthly brilliant orange. It may have contained orange juice, I don't know. I'm thinking of Bonomo's Turkish Taffy for some inexplicable reason and other treats. I also am reminded of Helen playing the piano and relishing the moment. So much music, great memories".

4/20/99 from Pat: "Why is it, as the youngest, I have the poorest memory? I remember the orange soda (Helen and Charlie ALWAYS provided the soda, from Gristedes, at ALL the family gatherings, right?) but the name brand escapes me…..and John, as for the turkish taffy-wasn't that an after-church treat stopping at the local pharmacy to pick up the Sunday paper?"

4/21/99 Cynthia:
Hi Emma well, the family is picking up on this and email is flying. Are you getting any of their memories?
I remember traditional things at Grandma (Emilia's)…we were there almost every Sunday for dinner and then fun, with whoever went also (and many did so as not to miss anything!) Aunt Helene would eventually sit at the piano and accompany us (played by ear) as we gathered round to sing. Aunt Mary always took us upstairs to her room to prepare a "show" for the grown ups. She had us prepare something we'd done or learned in school and we'd perform, one at a time - or several together. It was great practice for poise and confidence later in life!!
At Christmas time we would share the oplatek - which was a blessed communion wafer. Each person would get a piece and we'd go round the table breaking off and sharing a piece with everyone…making sure not to miss anyone…. wishing them good health and blessings. When I can get the wafer, my family still does that. An extra place is always set at the table for Christ and/or a visitor.

Grandma used to make "ponch-keys" (poczki)- and it was fun to bite into them and find out whether you had a cherry or prune or some other treat in the center. This was a donut type deep fried dough delicious treat!! We didn't eat meat on Fridays back then so I remember fish and borscht (the beet soup) and I'm absolutely positive I'm spelling everything wrong. I remember walks to Ridgeway Shopping Plaza on a Sunday afternoon for that lime rickey or root beer float! I remember Terry's beautiful blond curls. I remember getting a Polish language book and trying to learn Polish so I could really talk with Grandma. Never got it, sorry to say. Egg hunts at 4th Street.

The Holy Name Church which houses a side altar of Grandma's and a post as you walk up the center aisle, fairly near the front, with Uncle Frankie's name on it (In Memory of…) built stone by stone with Pop's hands and many
others. Grandma's dedication to the Ladies Society of the church… I remember wearing a gen-U-ine Polish costume and marching in the Pulaski Day Parade in NYC!! even have a picture to prove it…might be worthy of John putting on the web page!! I remember Christmas Eve at Grandma and Pop's…aunts and uncles drew names and you didn't know who had you until that night when we exchanged gifts. I don't remember enough!! Just know we had an unbelievable foundation and were raised feeling that we mattered. I have a call into to my Mom (who is visiting Aunt Helene) and might have to correct some of this, but how's that for now??

4/21/99- And I remember Pop, with his full head of beautiful white hair. I remember being outside in the back yard with him near Grandma's wonderful garden. And I remember picking him up from his job at the veternarian's hospital…he loved animals and they used to follow him home all the time. I remember staying overnight at Grandma's with Andee (was it when Helene had Marilyn??) and we formed a club in the garage called "Bugs and Nails" and made up a song, "We're the same, we're the same and the smoke goes up the chimney just the same"!
Lillian Janis remembers (and this is important stuff for all of you):

  1. Poczki (the ponch-keys I phoneticized!!) were filled with cherries and were made on the
    Tuesday before Lent.
  2. No meat on Holy Saturday, but kielbasa and eggs and bobka Easter morning!!
  3. Christmas Eve, called "vigila" in Polish was also meatless. The children always looked out the window to see the first star then dinner was served. After dinner, sang the beautiful Polish hymns, which I still play for my family every year. Marcia gave me a wonderful music book of the Polish Christmas hymns and John P. has made us all CD's for those beautiful songs. After that, everyone went to Midnight Mass.
  4. Pop (Anthony) came to America when he was 5 years old with his parents and they went to Branford, CT. He worked for Yale and Town as a foreman (equivalent to an electrical engineer today) and he invented a piece of equipment that prevented people from losing their fingers!! At night, after working at the factory, he'd sell real estate. If he made a sale, he'd come home and wake everyone up with ice cream or some other treat. He also received a citation from the state for helping teach and have over 50 Polish immigrants become US citizens. Pop was RESPONSIBLE for getting the property that Holy Name Church is built on and my Dad, EMJanis helped dig the foundation. The reason the side altar is Grandma's (I've always called her Babcia) is because their family were the 2nd highest donors to the church fund). Pop was great for taking his children everywhere and he always made them sing. He'd say, "if you stop singing, we're going home". Traditionally they'd all go to Halloween Park for the 4th of July fireworks and for Friday night movies… and they'd make their own sandbag seats. Pop played the violin (and here, Cynthia interjects, I remember playing the violin also and performing for the family in the back yard at 4th Street. Must've been Aunt Mary who set up seats in rows and I played "Auld Lang Syne"!). Pop would play at weddings, dances, christenings, etc. mostly at the Mission Street Hall (Polish) and the children always went. "In those days, children were welcome everywhere".
  5. Emilia came over to America, alone, when she was 13. So oppressed by the Russians (had to hide Polish books under tables, etc.) that her family felt she had to go to have a chance in life. Went to cousin's in New Britian, then Stamford. She was such a big helper at church she had the keys to the kitchen and was there for everything. During WWI, she worked for the Red Cross mailing cloths to Europe. During the flu epidemic, despite the size of her own family to care for, she managed to take care of sick neighbors also. That's it for now. Love, Cynthia"

4/22/99 - Marilyn: "i guess you are getting inundated with stories and i want a copy of all! this is cousin marilyn from columbus ohio- i have very fond memories much like the ones you heard about but also that each holiday seemed to have a pattern to it: christmas eve was meatless as cinnie said and at grandma's. then christmas day eve was there also- on christmas eve, aunt mary was always upstairs wrapping like it had caught her off guard and we would wait for her to come down- took forever and inevitably the girls would receive a new piece of silver for our collections- i used to wish for something else but now i realize what a treasure that flatware was- cuz i can't afford it now! on easter we would return to grandmas for egg hunt, blessed egg and ham… i have a picture of your dad terry at the easter table with his beatles sweatshirt on! mother's day was at grandmas again- but fathers' day we didn't celebrate as a big group i think because pop was gone - i have my own family memories of those days 4th of july was at our house- barbeque in the backyard under the apple tree- lots of good food and games outside-sometimes the fireworks afterword and uncle Eddie Janis asleep in a lawn chair early! labor day was at aunt betty's and uncle tony's- softball, barbeque and a big campfire with singing all around' kids running catching fireflies and the not too distant sounds of the merritt parkway nearby. thanksgiving was at grandma's again- turkey as big as a house and all the trimmings- each holiday you knew where you'd be- now my kids always ask what are we doing for… we're far away from family so friends become family- but the traditions seem to change as the players do.. my family memories were constant and wonderful life's pattern has changed but the family stays connected if only for brief emails and weddings and funerals- glad to be a part of this motley crew…love, marilyn"

4/22/99 -  "I have enjoyed your stories and anecdotes you have sent to Emma. I was wondering if Frankie could be included in this somehow. I really feel that all of the stories | heard about him, from my grandmother and mother, made me feel like I always had a great Uncle Frankie, even though neither my mother, nor I ever met him. I think his brothers and sisters kept him alive, and a part of our family. Did you ever see the transcriptions of his letters? It's quite fascinating. Anyway, I don't have Emma's email address, nor do I know enough about Frankie. I just thought he should be included somehow. I know my grandmother, and your mother have always remembered his birthday, not to mention the day he died. Love, Deedee"

from Pat: Characteristics LOUD
Several conversations going on at once and people participating in several of them
Great tolerance of individual quirks and personalities, LOTS OF SINGING people needing to hear certain songs- Aunt Helen some Polish song Aunt Mary any song by anyone! Uncle Ed Janis- Ham and Eggs and Good night ladies Uncle tony Minnie the Moocher (yellow rose of texas for me) Uncle Ed poltrack - "blood on the saddle" Barbara- He's got the whole world in His hands Jim/John/Chris/Bob medly of 70' tunes - Dylan/ GDead/etc.

Personally, I have no memory past last week, but I do remember Aunt Adeline telling me a story about how, back in the days of the motel, that they had this big party for some Russian aristocrats and how she swore one of them was the infamous Anastasia…..I'm not sure who else could remember, or relate, or VERIFY the details of the story, but I was entertained by it……and then again…… it could be TOTAL folklore (as in fable!)….GOOD LUCK! Pat PS If I think of more, I'll pass them on….."

"Holidays! I'm not talking about the two biggies. All possible holidays were a reason to gather at "Grandma's house. The reason being that for this very robust woman(who lived well into her eighties) it might be her "last". And so for years we dragged piaypens and heated bottles and hid in attics and leaned out of third story windows and played guitars and ate kielbasa and horseradish and counted heads as we loaded cars to leave (especially Henry's-- who was apt to forget a kid or two). Ed Poltrack has "movies" of us leaving the house and it rivals the keystone cops bit of a stream of people coming out of a small car!. How lucky we were to have those days and I imagine each of us in our own way tries to preserve some of this wonderful chaos. Love you, Aunt Betty"
