Owls Head Light Station was built on land purchased from the heirs of Nathaniel Merryman on 22 November 1824. It was first lighted on 10 September 1825. Isaac Stearns was the first lightkeeper. It is a squat lighthouse on a 80 foot bluff overlooking Penobscot Bay.

There is no parking at the lighthouse, but the hike in has scenic views of the bay and maybe a few hitchhiking ticks.

After arriving, prepare to have to walk up a ramp and steps to reach the highest vantage point.

The lighthouse is now maintained by the Coast Guard, but over its history, there were many lightkeepers including families. There is even a grave for a family dog.

The gift shop was open when I visited. I asked if there were any ghosts (they knew of none) but neglected to ask about Spot the dog. I consulted Mr. Google and learned about Spot the lighthouse dog and the fact that this is the MOST haunted lighthouse in Maine. You can read about it too.
